Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Close Encounters of the Third Kind poster

Missing planes from WWII are found in New Mexico. A ship is found in the middle of the Gobi Desert. Otherworldly sounds broadcast down from the heavens over India. All of these events have seemingly no link but yet, something strange is brewing in a sleepy Indiana town where Roy Neary witnesses a close encounter that changes his life.

Released in 1977, mere months after the smash hit success of George Lucas’s Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind is sci-fi of an entirely different flavor. Borrowing from ufologist J. Allen Hynek’s close encounter scale, Spielberg weaves a tale of infallible belief, perseverance, and hope. Starring Richard Dreyfuss as the main character Roy Neary, Close Encounters is full of drama, tension, and impressive movie mechanics.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is available to stream on Prime Video.

Dylan created Movies Not Films as a fun project to stay occupied during the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. He started with a simple movie diary on a spreadsheet and eventually transformed it into MoviesNotFilms.com with a robust catalog of reviews, suggestions, and ranking lists. Currently living with his now-fiancé and two dogs, Dylan has a full-time career but still makes time to watch all the latest movies and most of the new TV shows.
